I've known for a little while now that I wanted my first blog post to be on Father's Day. Well, while it's not getting published on the Okinawa Father's Day, it is still Father's Day in some parts of the world, like our home, the good ol' US of A.
I didn't get this published yesterday, Father's Day in our time zone, because we spent our Father's Day with the father of my children, the twins, away, and I can tell you, I was feeling the importance of their Father, my husband and support, yesterday!
I wanted to start on Father's Day because after spending time with some of the families I have been working with, I have learned something amazing: dads bring the magic!
While moms are keeping everything together, caring for all of the needs of their children, worrying about shots they want, what to do next, when to move on, and doing all those things moms always do best, the dads are off bringing magic to their children. I don't mean magic like performing magic tricks or making things appear out of thin air.
Here's what I mean: dad says that funny thing that gets everyone laughing, dad finds a pinecone and makes the 2 year old (who has been attached to moms hip with a straight face) smile, dad holds the baby and knows how to comfort them, dad comes out on a practically broken toe to get those pictures with his pregnant wife carrying the baby before its too late, dad holds mom's purse, dad never stops being there, dad creates the fun by throwing their son really high, dad finds the new fun thing to do, dad bring the magic!!
Dads, you may think you are just off in the corner unseen, being told what to do, just there because you have to be, or you may totally be there to get great pictures and have a good time, but no matter what the truth comes out: you need to be there! Everything you know about your family is invaluable, its magic I can't create.
So thank you dads today and everyday for bringing love and joy to your families. That love creates some of the best moments I've seen.
Happy Father's Day!
